Honey Bend: May 2008

A neat family find

The first weekend of May my husband, son, Mom and myself headed over to Illinois to drop off my Dad's headstone. Took us a year but we got it done. So sweet he wanted Jerry loved Sally(Mom and Dad) on the bronze plaque. We headed to St. Louis Friday and stayed at the Hyatt Union Station, it is a gorgeous hotel. On Saturday we headed to Litchfield and Honey Bend Illinois. We had a wonderful cookout with my cousins. My cousin Sheri is always giving me great family treasures. Amongst the many treasures she gave me this poem my great grand dad wrote. This is nothing rare since we have tons he printed at his printing press. She said turn it over when you are done.

He was always trying to get his poems published. While it was not published he got a response from Robert Frost. So neat!!

A good day

Sunday was such a good day for us on Grant St. I love when you have the perfect balance of getting things accomplished and having some fun. I got up early yesterday morning and headed out to my favorite monthly flea and found some wonderful things. I then met hubby and G for breakfast. We headed back to the house to get much needed yard work done. It has rained so much here that we have fallen majorly behind. We still have things to work on but we made a great start. Griffin had a blast riding his four wheeler all over the back yard. Hubby and I later headed out for a ride on his motorcycle. It was a good day. Now I must get off this computer and finish that yard work. Have a great week.

Summer

It is officially here the countdown to head to Michigan. It is a ritual my parents would always pack the car and head out Mother's Day. My brother and I would head up at separate times of the summer. I don't have any pictures to share, I just bought a digital camera when I started blogging, sad huh. Since my Dad passed last year we vacation now with my brother and his family. It is such fun and we have started a tradition for the kids.

The cottage is such a great place filled with history and tradition. My grandparents purchased the cottage before I was born. My grandfather worked in Manistique Michigan supervising a CCC camp, my Mom was just three. My grandparents always came back for the summers. They finally purchased a cottage across the street from their best friends. They were on the lake, our sweet cottage was on the cove of a river. I have gone to the cottage since I was a baby. The generations of the two families have grown up together. So in a couple months the families will head up to the cottage crossing the Mackinac bridge heading to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Four wheeling, fishing, jet skiing, canoing and many other lake activities will take place. Most important family bonds and traditions will be cemented for the next generation.

The Kentucky Derby Hat Swap

Happy Derby Hat Day to all. I wish I was headed there but instead I am on my way to St. Louis! Be sure to leave a comment on this post so your name is put into the hat for a giveaway! Now you must have a Mint Julep if your at the Derby. Here is a recipe to try at home, yummy

The Early Times Mint Julep Recipe

2 cups sugar
2 cups water
Sprigs of fresh mint
Crushed ice
Early Times Kentucky Whisky
Silver Julep Cups

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Early Times Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.
